Tree Census & Tree Counting Agency in India: Software, Drones & Field Teams

A tree census, tree by tree — each tree located by GPS, identified, measured and photographed on the Anaxee app.
Quick answer: A tree census is a count of every tree in a defined area — a city, a ward, a campus, an estate or a plantation — where each tree gets a GPS location and a unique ID, with its species, girth, height, canopy and health recorded, mapped on a GIS dashboard. Anaxee runs tree census and tree counting end to end across India: the app and software, 40,000+ field people, optional drones, AI photo quality-check and the back-office data team — as one partner, or as any single layer you need.

Counting trees sounds simple until you have to do it across a whole city. A tree census means visiting every tree in the area, fixing it to a GPS point, giving it a unique number, identifying the species, measuring its girth, height and canopy, judging its health, and loading all of it onto a map that an official, an auditor or the public can open. Do it by hand and it is slow, patchy and impossible to re-check. Do it with software but no people and you get estimates, not a census.

That is the gap Anaxee fills. We are a technology company with our own nationwide field network — so a tree census gets the app, the people, the drones where they help, the quality control and the data management from a single partner, whether you are a municipal corporation counting under the Tree Act, a forest department mapping green cover, a company auditing a CSR plantation, or an estate or campus that simply needs to know what it has.

The market is real and recurring
₹8–10 crore
a single city’s GIS tree census can cost — Ahmedabad paid about ₹7.89 per tree surveyed
Cities run a fresh census every several years under their Tree Act. Pune’s census found 4 million+ trees; Tamil Nadu tendered a census across six cities at once. These are large, repeat exercises where counting accuracy and defensible data decide the result.

What a tree census records, tree by tree

  • GPS location & unique ID. Every tree pinned to a coordinate and given a number, so it can be found again, re-checked and never double-counted.
  • Species identification. Botanical and local name of each tree, with unidentified trees photographed and confirmed by experts — the backbone of a biodiversity register.
  • Girth, height & canopy. The measurements that drive age estimation, carbon stock and the green-cover maths cities report.
  • Health & hazard condition. Which trees are healthy, diseased, hollow or dangerous — the data that protects public safety and guides pruning and removal.
  • Ownership & ward mapping. Government, private or institutional land, by ward and zone — so counts roll up exactly the way a corporation needs them.
  • A dated photo of every tree. Geo-tagged and time-stamped, so every single record can be audited against the ground, not taken on trust.

Tool-only, agency-only — or all of it

Most tree-counting vendors are one of two things. Remote-sensing tools read satellite or drone imagery with AI and hand you an estimate and a GIS file — fast, but with no one on the ground to identify a species under the canopy or satisfy a census that needs a human at every tree. Traditional agencies send field teams and a basic app, but reach is shallow outside the metros and the quality layer is thin.

Anaxee gives you every layer — and you can take the whole stack or just the piece you are missing.

The software & app

Our tree-census app and GIS dashboard — geo-tag, unique ID, species, measurements and photo per tree, with ward and species roll-ups. White-labelled where you need it.

The people

40,000+ Digital Runners across 540 districts and 11,000+ pincodes — trained to the census form, so you count every tree, not a sample, anywhere in India.

Drones, where they help

Aerial orthomosaics for canopy and whole-site counts that cross-check the ground data — see our drone & survey services.

AI + human quality check

AI reads every photo and flags duplicates, impossible locations and visits that never happened; a human QA team validates before anything is final.

Dashboards & templates

A live census dashboard and downloadable templates — species lists, ward summaries, biodiversity registers — exported the way your report needs them.

Back-office & data management

Cleaning, de-duplication, species reconciliation, reporting and ongoing data management — the desk work that turns raw field capture into a census you can defend.

Fun fact: Pune’s geo-enabled tree census counted more than 4 million trees — roughly one tree for every 1.27 people in the city. A number that precise is only possible when every tree is visited and pinned, not estimated from the sky.

Where technology and AI change the game

Every tree is captured on the Anaxee Partner app — 100,000+ downloads, with an in-built training module per form — so each record arrives geo-tagged and time-stamped with a photo, flowing straight to a live dashboard and REST API. Then AI reads the field photos: it flags a tree photographed twice, a location that is physically impossible, or a run of captures logged too fast to be real — and a human QA team checks the flags before the count is signed off. That is how a census of hundreds of thousands of trees stays honest. It is the same quality layer Anaxee runs on drone-plus-ground-truth tree counting for carbon and plantation projects.

Who a tree census is for

    • Municipal corporations & councils — a GIS tree census under the Tree Act, with a unique ID per tree, a biodiversity register and a public dashboard.
    • Forest & environment departments and Smart Cities — green-cover assessment and tree inventory across one city or many at once.
    • Companies & CSR teams — counting and verifying a CSR plantation’s survival, or an estate’s green assets, for BRSR and sustainability reporting.
    • Infrastructure, real estate & industry — tree enumeration for environmental clearance, transplantation planning and compliance.
    • Campuses, estates & gated communities — a one-time inventory of what you have, mapped and measured.

      Frequently asked questions

      What is a tree census?
A tree census is a complete count of every tree in a defined area, where each tree is given a GPS location and a unique ID, and its species, girth, height, canopy and health are recorded and mapped on a GIS dashboard. Unlike a sample survey, it visits every tree — which is what a Tree Act census, a biodiversity register or a defensible green-cover number requires.
Does Anaxee provide the tree census software, or the whole service?
Either. Anaxee can run the full census end to end — app, field teams, drones, quality check and data management — or supply just the layer you are missing: the software and dashboard, the field workforce, the drone count, the AI photo quality-check, the templates, or the back-office data cleaning and reporting.
How is this different from a satellite or drone tree count?
Aerial and satellite tools estimate tree numbers and canopy from imagery — useful for scale, but they cannot identify a species under the canopy, read a tree’s health, or satisfy a census that needs a human record per tree. Anaxee pairs the aerial layer, where it helps, with runners on the ground who visit and record each tree, so you get a real census, not an estimate.
Can you count trees for a municipal or Tree Act census?
Yes — the method is built for it: a unique ID per tree, GPS location, species, girth, height, canopy, age and ownership, mapped ward by ward with a geo-tagged photo of each tree, delivered on a dashboard and as a biodiversity register. We scope the exact attributes and format to your tender or Tree Act requirement.
What does a tree census cost in India?
It depends on the number of trees, the area, the terrain and the depth of attributes recorded — city censuses have been tendered at roughly ₹7.89 per tree, running into crores for a full city. Anaxee scopes it to your project; book a short call for a number.
How large an area can you cover?
From a single campus or ward to a whole city, or several cities at once. The field network spans 540 districts and 11,000+ pincodes across 26 states, so geography is not the constraint — staffing and ramping the right number of trained enumerators is what we plan for.
How do you make sure the count is accurate and not faked?
Every tree is captured with a GPS location, time-stamp and photo on the app. AI reads the photos and flags duplicates, impossible locations and visits logged too fast to be real; a human QA team validates the flags, and suspect records are rejected and redone before the census is final.
Can you verify a CSR plantation’s tree count and survival?
Yes. For CSR and plantation projects we count and geotag every tree and return to verify survival over 6, 12 and 24 months — so trees planted becomes trees proven alive, with dated photographic evidence.
